THE LITTLE ADOPTION SHOP – NIGHT
CHRIS is trying to sleep. It’s very late. Rescue dog SAM snuggles next to him. Suddenly, Sam jumps up and licks Chris’ face.
SAM: Dude!
CHRIS: What?
SAM: Our adoption rate sucks.
CHRIS: Tell me something I don’t know.
SAM: So…
CHRIS: So what?
SAM: So, what are you gonna do about it?
CHRIS: I’m going to sleep.
SAM: Sleeping won’t solve the problem.
CHRIS: Yeah, but I can forget about it for five hours.
Chris turns over and hugs his pillow.
Disappointed, Sam shakes his head and slides back under the covers. A moment later, he pops his head out again:
SAM: Dude!
CHRIS: Leave me alone!
SAM: We gotta do something!
CHRIS: Tomorrow… We will sort it out tomorrow.
Sam spins around and licks Chris’ face again.
SAM:Carpe diem, dude! “Seize the day!” We need to fix this now! Now-now-now-now-now!
Chris rubs his face and smells his hand.
CHRIS: Yuck! What’s that smell?
Sam smiles.
CHRIS: Sam, have you been eating cat poop again?
SAM: Can’t help it. It’s delicious! And crunchy! Yum-yum-yum-yum-yum!
CHRIS: Oh, that’s disgusting! You sleep on the floor tonight!
SAM: We don’t have time to sleep! We need an Action Plan!
CHRIS: You need to stop eating cat poop. It’s making you weird.
SAM: Get up! Let’s work!
CHRIS: Sam! It’s three in the morning! Go to sleep!
SAM: Work-work-work-work-work!
CHRIS: Sleep-sleep-sleep…
Sam licks Chris’ face again.
SAM: Procrastinator!
CHRIS: Cat poop eater!
SAM: Alright. But I’ll write up our Action Plan first thing tomorrow morning!
CHRIS: Great. You do that.
Sam slips back under the covers. A moment later —
SAM: Dude…
CHRIS: What??!!
SAM: What are you gonna dream about?
CHRIS: I’m going to dream about sleeping.
SAM: Guess what I’m going to dream about!
CHRIS: Cat poop?
Sam spins around several times.
SAM:
No! Something much bigger than cat poop! Something bold and beautiful!
Sam stands up proudly on all four legs and yells:
SAM: I HAVE A DREAM!!!
CHRIS: I have a headache.
SAM: I’m going to dream about a world where all animals are equal! A world where even dogs have a voice! A world where there’s a dog park on every corner and it’s not a crime to eat cat poop! A world where —
Zzz… CHRIS SNORES LOUDLY, interrupting Sam’s speech.
SAM: Hey! Wake-up! I’m making my Big Speech!
Chris keeps snoring. Sam is disappointed.
SAM: Humans…
Sam does a full body-shake, stretches his legs, then lies down next to Chris.
SAM: They’re always sleeping when you really need them.

SEEKING INTERNATIONAL PARTNERS TO FIND ADOPTIVE HOMES
SEEKING US/CANADA-based rescues and individual rescuers to partner with us to get our dogs into homes.
For almost ten years, we have been a Beijing-based rescue, but we are seeking to reduce our shelter presence here over the next three years, so we need to find homes for the dogs in our three shelters. We are not giving up on rescue in China, but we will be changing our sheltering and adoption model significantly.
Potential partners:
- humane societies
- private rescues
- individual rescuers (for instance, if you are an individual rescuer and are able to foster a couple dogs in your home or network of friends)
- individual adopters — of course, if you wish to adopt a dog from us directly to the US or Canada, please contact us.
By “partner” I mean to help us find homes, does not mean funding partner. We are developing funding for transport independently, so we’re not asking for rescue partners to fund us, but more importantly to help us help us foster and find homes for our dogs. We are also looking for lots of funding support too, but that is a separate issue. If partner rescues are open to co-funding the cost of transport, or doing fundraisers locally, great! But not a requirement.
We can arrange transport of dogs in groups of two to eight dogs per trip, but if there are larger organizations who have the ability to help us move more dogs per trip, please contact me.
We are very serious about health and immunity, and make sure all are dogs are healthy, vaccinated and that all travel-related quarantine and health inspection requirements are met.

新年好!Happy New Year!
A short video New Year’s Greeting from some of our fans and friends and their beloved furkids.
Ellie is Blind, but Healthy and Confident – Seeking a Home in the US or Canada!
This is Ellie. She was purchased by foreign rescuers from dog meat traders in Yulin, then left with resource-poor local rescuers. She and four others were suffering from distemper, but the local group had no funding to treat them. Although we are in Beijing, a volunteer of ours asked me for help, so we arranged to have her and four other dogs sent to Puppytown hospital in Guangzhou and managed to save all five from distemper. (Ellie later lost her eyesight to glaucoma.) We later brought them to Beijing.
Even though we were already overcapacity, OUR STYLE AT THE LITTLE ADOPTION SHOP IS THIS: Once we decide to rescue a dog or other animal, we take full responsibility and never leave them behind.
Even if we have to reach out to third-party shelters in Beijing (friends and co-rescuers) to help us temporarily keep them safe, we never give up and always keep them in our fold until they are adopted or reach the natural end of their lives. This is one reason we have 750 dogs in our care now.
At the time, I chose not to get involved in the controversy regarding how foreigners were rescuing dogs in Yulin, and continue to do so, but I really don’t see how people can raise money for a rescue, then leave the animals behind and never inquire about their welfare ever again.
***
For Ellie, who is blind, but healthy otherwise, we are now seeking a home for her overseas.
If anyone is able to give her a forever home, please contact us!!!
Good News for Abandoned Blind Dog Jenny (ADOPTED)
This is Jenny. After being abandoned by her human family, she spent a year and a half living under a tree in a park, blind, and totally dependent on the kindness of strangers, would leave food and water for her. When we found out about her, even though we were overcapacity, we got her out of harm’s way. Now, thanks to your support and the help of angels Sally, Andrea, Monique and her new future mom Pam, her life has already changed. On Christmas Day, she’s flying to the US to start the next chapter of her life.

Jenny – Blind, Abandoned Dog – Safe Now
Chinese rescue dog Jenny is small enough to fly in cabin. Totally blind. Super gentle personality. 3-5 years old. Was abandoned by her family after they moved away and has spent the last year in a park under a tree. Assume not spayed, but we can do that. Will be ready to fly to US/Canada by Nov 30. If anyone or organization is willing to adopt her, or foster her, please contact chris@littleadoptionshop.com Thank You!
XiaoXiao (adopted)
UDPATE: XiaoXiao has been provided lifelong sanctuary by the amazing folks at Home For Life. We are so grateful to them!!! XiaoXiao has a spinal injury but still has limited use of his back legs. He can walk a few steps at a time on his back legs and is super friendly.
Cooper
UPDATE: COOPER HAS BEEN ADOPTED! Cooper is a healthy female kitten, looking for a cat-experience family. She’s a tiny bit shy, but not feral, and has been making great progress with her foster mom. She’s almost completed her initial vaccinations, and is healthy and active. If we can’t find an adopter soon, we will need a new foster home asap. So, if you can foster or adopt, please contact chris@littleadoptionshop.com
Nana (I) – Struck by Car, Serious Spinal Injury
Nana was found either lost or abandoned and paralyzed on the ground. Then things took a turn for the worse — can’t describe for certain reasons that are sensitive, but she wound up in a place that would have been the end of her. By the time we got a call to help her, she had already been taken away. All hope was lost, and we couldn’t find a way to rescue her. Then a super-powered angel, who happens to be a good friend, got her out and we took her straight to hospital. X-ray doesn’t show obvious spinal column (vertebrae) injury, but still need to do MRI and other tests.
UPDATE: Results are not great. There are no obvious breaks in the spinal column itself, but the MRI shows that she had a very serious blow, with serious damage to spinal cord around around thoracic vertebrae, with less serious damage near the neck. She obviously suffered a very hard blow (by car, most likely), but is no possibility of surgery. Vet Dr. Rao is going to try stem cell therapy and possible acupuncture. But prognosis is not good. I’m waiting to get digital copies of the MRI scans to share with other specialists.
If you want to support our work, please see our GoFundMe page. Every little bit helps!
Nana (II) – We’ll Miss You
UPDATE: NANA passed away but spent her last weeks in the most loving family she’s ever had. [Updated photos below.] After having a mammary gland tumor removed a few months ago, Nana developed a new tumor just behind her front right leg. Dr. Chen of Heng Ai operated yesterday, saying that he was able to get margins on the removal while not damaging critical nerves and blood vessels (this was a lucky). Waiting for pathology report. Nana previously had a massive mammary gland tumor before we first rescued her. She is a super friendly dog, with a lot of spirit. If there were a family willing to take her in for her final years – her prognosis won’t be great, but we’re hoping for the best.
To support our work, please see our GoFundMe page.
Jinjin – Hospice Miracle
Diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma, and given only a few months live, Jinjin was offered hospice in the family of Oso (her buddy now). So far, Jinjin has been totally healthy, without any signs yet of aggressive recurrence of her cancer. We are so grateful to Jinjin’s foster family and her soulmate Oso.
To support our work, please see our GoFundMe page.
Spay/Neuter
Unless there are medical circumstances preventing spay/neuter, we spay/neuter all our rescued dogs and cats as soon as possible. (We did have a couple “oops” moments in the past, such as when Tuzi had multiple eye surgeries (successful), but we unwittingly sent him intact to his partner rescue in the US. That was embarrassing, but very rarely happens.) Manager Wu of our Shelter 2 has been in charge of spay/neutering most of our recent rescues, including these four furballs, who were spayed/neutered yesterday at Dr. Zhang’s clinic in Huairou.
To support our work, please see our GoFundMe page.
Xiaofu
UPDATE: We believe that Xiaofu is quite old, she is still fighting recurrent infections but is fairly stable at this point. Xiaofu was found by a young man who helped us a few months ago on that big rescue in Daxing (where we spent weeks rescuing puppies from drainage tunnels, under buildings, etc.). She’s got FCV — https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feline_calicivirus — and is quite anemic. Dr. Jiang is doing his best to save her. I know I’m supposed to be limiting intake, but she would have been a goner left outside a few more days like this, and it’s still REALLY hard to motivate people to take responsibility. I try. I try to tell people, “Dude, you can do this! Take her to a vet. Raise some funds among friends. It’s just one cat.” But usually people just don’t believe in themselves, and say, “Well, I guess will just have to leave her outside.”
To support our work, please see our GoFundMe page.
